Book Box Tutorial…. Wednesday, Oct 29 2014

I had a number of requests for a Book Box Tutorial after creating my Halloween Book Box so here is the basis of my book box, You can adjust the papers and embellishments to fit whatever theme you would like. This time I’ve chosen some sweet Magnolia stamps and papers for a Wedding themed box.

Start by making your book cover, For this you will need stiff card, I used the backing from some of my paper pads, this tends to be a little thicker than your card weight and gives a nice result. Cut your card 10 1/4” x 6 1/4’ . Score lightly with a blade at 4 5/8” and 5 5/8 “ to create the spine (you just need to mark the surface of the card so it will bend neatly)

book box firm card base

Cut your paper panels for the inside 2 of 6 1/4” x 4 5/8” and 1 of 6 1/4” x 1“and outside 2 of 6 1/4” x 4 5/8” and 1 of 6 1/4” x 1“ You can cut these all from one paper pattern or 2 matching papers whatever your preference.

Punch a border strip to decorate the front cover, I’ve chosen Martha Stewart Eyelet Lace for this, Attach this to the edge of the front cover and attach all of your paper panels with double sided tape ( I also distressed all the paper edges with a dry brush and white acrylic paint to enhance the worn look of the papers)

book box paper outside

Add a pocket to the inside left panel, I used a paper piece 4 5/8” x 2 1/2” for this and added a punched border to match the front cover ( on the Halloween box I tore and inked the edge of the pocket in keeping with my theme)

Now for the book pages, this looks best in a good weight watercolour paper, I’ve used 300gsm Monte Mart (not overly expensive but has a nice weight and texture) You will need 2 pieces of 9” x 4 1//8” and 2 pieces of 9” x 5 1/4” Score with scor-pal  every 3/4” along the longer sides. I’ve then used the Martha Stewart Eyelet Lace Border to punch along one edge of each scored piece ( I didn’t do this on the Halloween Box as it had a different feel and I chose to leave the edges plain)

Ink the folded edges with a sponge dauber and SU Sahara Sand inkpad, I squeezed each panel together one at a time and inked all the pages at once

inked edges

To create the book section, insert one long side into one short side at the corners, making sure that the long sides are always on top, so that all the corners are the same at the end, use glue or glue dots to secure the top and bottom layers

From the back:

Add the sides one at a time and then the bottom:

book pages 3

From the front they look like this, all long edges are on the top:

From the back they look like this, all short edges are on the top:

Attach the book pages to the inside of the book with strong double sided tape

Decorate as desired

The finished book box can be found here if you would like to see how I decorated the inside, I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and will have a try at a book box for yourself. There are so many options for themes, colours and decorations, you are limited only by your imagination. I would love to see what you come up with
